Fluffy Wand Curls w/ Coil Curl Clip-in Extensions

BIG, FLUFFY CURLS?? Yes, Please! If you’re looking for a perfectly done but not overdone hairstyle, try creating fluffy wand curls. Wand curls are fun, romantic and will certainly make a statement. These undefined curls are full of volume and give an effortless look that can be worn with a pair of jeans or an evening gown.

Wand curls are typically created by taking small sections of hair and wrapping it around a curling wand. Since the hair is not being flattened between two surfaces, some of the hair's natural texture can still be seen. This style also gives you the flexibility to choose how much curl definition you want. For tighter curls, use smaller sections of hair. For looser curls, you can use larger sections of hair OR reduce the amount of time direct heat is applied.

Let's take a look at how Armani used 14" Coil Curl clip ins to compliment her 4C shoulder length natural hair. Like your natural hair, the Coil Curl clip-ins can be stretched and curled to blend flawlessly.

What you’ll need:

  • 1.5” curling wand
  • Detangling brush
  • Heat protectant spray
  • Coil Curl Clip-ins by Melanj Hair

For this look, you can style your natural hair and clip-ins separately before installing. Starting with your stretched or blow dried natural hair, apply a heat protectant and start curling by wrapping a small section around the curling wand and letting it sit for a few seconds. Once your hair heats up, release the curl and allow it to cool completely without manipulating the hair.

After you've curled your entire head, you're ready to prep your clip-ins...

For starters, you'll want to prep your clip-ins the same way you've prepped your natural hair. Since this style is done on stretched hair, use a detangling brush or a hair dryer on the low heat setting to stretch the extensions' curl pattern. Remember to be gentle, work in small sections and start at the ends of the hair while working your way up.

After the hair is completely stretched, apply a heat protectant and begin curling the hair by wrapping small sections around the curling wand and allowing it to sit for a couple of seconds before releasing the curl. You should end up with a plump, curl that's full of texture and body. Be careful not to overheat your extensions, which can cause damage to the natural curl pattern.

After releasing the curl, gently pull on the ends to stretch it.Your extensions will likely heat up faster than your natural hair so this will help them match your natural hair which will most likely have a looser curl. Continue curling your extensions until you've curled all of the pieces you'll be using for the style.

Once all of your clip-ins are curled, gently brush through the ends to create a more relaxed and effortless look. Now, you’re ready to install and fluff!

Not wanting to use heat? No problem!

If you want to achieve the same look without using direct heat on your hair, we got you! You can create a similar look using rollers instead of a curling wand. This will ensure you keep both your natural hair and extensions healthy while avoiding any risk of heat damage altogether.

What you'll need:

  • Styling Foam
  • 1.5” flexi rods or rollers
  • Hair Dryer w/ brush attachment
  • Hooded hair dryer (optional)
  • Coil Curl Clip-ins by Melanj Hair

Like the fluffy curls created with a curling wand, you'll want to start by blow drying or stretching your natural hair and your clip-in extensions. Once your hair is stretched, you can choose to roll your hair before or after installing the clip-ins.

In this tutorial, the extensions were installed before rolling the hair. This will ensure your final hairstyle is completely blended since your natural hair and extensions are curled together.

Once your clip-ins are installed, you'll need to apply a styling foam and wrap the hair (in small sections) around the rollers. You can leave the rollers in overnight OR sit under a hooded dryer for at least 45 min to ensure the curls are set. Before removing the rollers, make sure your hair is completely dry from any product applied.

For maximum volume, separate the curls and FLUFF!
