From red carpets to your favorite influencers, we’re seeing this 90s hair trend everywhere. Typically featured on bone straight hair, we couldn’t wait to add some texture to the style to give it the Melanj flair.
Check out how Blake recreated the trend using a set of 18” Coarse Kinky Straight clip-ins on her old blow out. Our Coarse Kinky Straight clip-ins are the perfect blend for hair types 3B/C - 4C because they will blend with your hair blown out hair using minimal heat.
For starters, you'll want to gather you hair into a high ponytail or puff and secure loosely with a ponytail holder. Apply edge control or gel to the perimeter of your ponytail and begin smoothing it in place with your boar bristle brush. This will ensure your ponytail is nice and sleek. Once you have it to your liking, securing with a ponytail holder.
Now you're ready to work on the ponytail -- gather your puff and tie it down with a ponytail holder. This is great for thicker and/or shorter natural hair. If your hair is longer or fully detangled, you can choose to braid your ponytail instead. Once you have your ponytail base, you're ready to begin installing your clip-ins.
Starting at the base of your ponytail, begin wrapping your clip-ins around the ponytail until you reach the base of the ponytail. To conceal the wefts at the base of the ponytail, grab a small section of hair from the bottom of the ponytail, wrap it around the wefts and secure it with a bobby pin.
After your ponytail is secured, use a 1.5" curling iron to flip the ends. Apply hair clips to hold the curl in place until it cools, this will ensure the curl is fully set in place. Once your curls are set, you're ready to SLAY your vintage ponytail!
Got me through a trip where I didn't have much time to manipulate my hair, and they were so seamlessly installed that they looked like my real hair. Would absolutely recommend!
I was recommended by a friend to purchase these clip-ins and I’m so glad I made the investment! The first photo is me with my natural hair. The second photo (glasses, side part, in a grey-blue room with a cream colored sweater) was the photo i took right after getting a light press at the salon and having them installed. My stylist also lightly pressed and curled the hair. They held a curl super well (a little too well lol) and even after my silk press grew out, the hair continued to blend pretty naturally. The hair is naturally a darkish-brown, and is a bit lighter than my natural hair so in sunlight there is a bit of differentiation. However, my hair is long-ish (about 14-inches) and I purchased the 18-inch clips so it still blended fairly well. Super minimal shedding, very comfortable in my head and easy to install. I used a silk/satin scarf after install to minimize frizz and create a more seamless blend. The only time I used all clips was when it was installed at the salon. Also, generally I did not sleep in my clip-ins, but I was able to do so on nights where I needed a quicker transition in the morning. There was very minimal styling needed the next day aside from maybe some edge gel and light brushing. I have used both a hair dryer and flat iron (with heat protectant) on these clips and the hair still responds the same! Overall, I love these clips-ins for the added density and length to my natural hair!
Everyone, including my mother, thought this was my 4c hair. The quality is excellent. I also bought the wefts and dyed them and have had them installed twice. This hair is perfect for low maintenance, easy to style with water and your favorite curl gel (opt for high quality, I like Uncle Funkys Daughter Curl Magic.) you will love this.
