2 Ways to Install Your Clip-in Extensions

You’ve decided to take the plunge and invest in your very first set of Melanj Hair clip-in extensions. In all your excitement, you open the set, spread out all of the pieces and now you’re wondering what to do next?! Don’t worry, we got you!

The sets are made up of several wefted hair pieces in varying sizes designed to fit around your head, but where you place them is completely up to you! You can’t go wrong with the installation of clip-ins as long as you remember TWO things -- make sure they’re evenly spaced and COVER YOUR WEFTS!

The two basic installation methods below will put you on the road to flawlessness in no time.

The Loose Hair Method

If you plan to leave your natural hair out, you’ll want to use the Loose Hair Method. This method is the quickest way to install your clip-ins and a great way to add volume and length to your natural hair.

  1. To get started, part your hair at the nape of your neck and install a clip-in weft that fits across the section.; we recommend starting with the 3-clip wefts.
  2. Working your way up, continue parting your hair in sections spaced 1.5” apart and installing the clip-in weft or combination of clip-in wefts that fit across the section. Leave the larger 4 or 5-clip weft for the top of your head so the hair will lay as flat as possible.
  3. Continue to work around your head in a u-shape to ensure your clip-ins are blended from front to back and top to bottom.
  4. Once your clip ins are installed, you’re ready to curl them or style as desired.

The Braid Down Method

If you’re using your extensions as a partially protective style, you’ll want to use the Braid Down Method to install your clip-ins. Before you get started, prep your natural hair by sectioning off a thin section around your part and hairline, then braid down the remaining hair.

  1. Start at the nape of your neck and install a clip-in weft that fits across the section.; we recommend starting with the 3-clip wefts.
  2. Continue installing the clip ins leaving about 1.5 inches between each row and working around your head in a u-shape.
  3. Once you’ve made it to your loose hair, begin parting sections of the hair and place the clips into these sections while you continue to work up and around your head. This will ensure the front of your hair is blended with the clip ins and they are not only placed at the back of your head.
  4. Like the Loose Hair Method, we recommend saving the larger wefts for the top sections of your hair to create a seamless finish.
  5. Once your clip ins are installed, you’re ready to curl them or style as desired.
